Volunteer, retired nurse donate quilt
Ardene Friest, a long-time SwedishAmerican volunteer who has contributed nearly 14,700 hours of service, and Carol Swenson, retired SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center director and long-time registered nurse, donated a unique quilt to the SwedishAmerican Center for Women during a special reception Nov. 12.
Featuring a pattern titled “Grandmother’s Flower Garden,” the quilt includes flower elements that Friest began piecing during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Some of the flowers are more than 75 years old. Swenson pieced the “paths” between the flowers and performed all of the quilting.
In addition to her many hours of volunteer service at SwedishAmerican, Friest has made many contributions to the health care field over the years, having graduated from nursing school in 1943.
“We are proud to receive this special quilt,” said SwedishAmerican Health System President and CEO Dr. Bill Gorski, who recognized the quilters during the ceremony. “This gift, made in Ardene’s honor, reflects her commitment and dedication to nursing, health care and SwedishAmerican. I also would like to thank Carol for her many years of service and leadership at SwedishAmerican.”
Following the ceremony, the quilt was placed on permanent display at the Center for Women’s Breast Health Center, on the second floor of the Renaissance Pavilion on the SwedishAmerican Hospital campus.
