World War II veteran featured at Nov. 15 Camp Grant meeting
Staff Report
The Friends of Camp Grant will hold their meeting at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Camp Grant Museum, 1004 Samuelson Road, Rockford.
Guest speaker that night is Donald P. Schoo, a World War II veteran who is the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Schoo will describe World War II events as they happened firsthand. Starting with the landing on Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944, the liberation of Europe begins. The hedgerows in Normandy create fighting from field to field. Braving the winter and surviving the Battle of the Bulge and the relief of Bastogne, the fight continues into Germany and the town of Weimar. Just outside Weimar is Buchenwald, the Nazi concentration camp.
Schoo’s description of what he saw when he and other Americans entered and liberated the camp will astound those who attend.
