Rockford women seek turkey donations to help New Jersey hurricane victims

Two area women are asking businesses and individuals in the Rockford area to donate turkeys to help Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey this Thanksgiving.
Betty Kitzman and Judy Boerma, both of Rockford, plan to take at least 25 to 30 cooked turkeys, put them on ice in Kitzman’s car and deliver them to storm victims Tuesday, Nov. 20.
“We are just going to drive to New Jersey and start delivering turkeys to the first people we see who need Thanksgiving turkeys,” Kitzman said.
Kitzman and Boerma decided to make the approximately 1,000-mile trip after New Jersey took the brunt of Sandy’s wrath. While it took only days for the East Coast to reopen for business, residents are still reeling from the largest Atlantic hurricane on record.
“Some people lost everything,” Kitzman said. “We’d like to at least help them restore some normalcy, and let them know they are far from forgotten this Thanksgiving.”
The journey will begin in Rockford next Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, after Kitzman and Boerma load the birds into the trunk and back seat of Kitzman’s Cadillac. They plan to stay in New Jersey until all the turkeys have been delivered to those in need.
Kitzman said turkeys should be cooked; however, uncooked birds will be accepted. The women are also seeking financial donations to help with fuel and lodging costs.
