Rockford’s downtown Winter Wonderland opens for season Nov. 23

Staff Report

Winter Wonderland will open at downtown Rockford’s Davis Park, 320 S. Wyman St., with a 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, grand-opening celebration. The celebration will feature a Winter Wonderland Wheel that attendees can spin to win prizes.

Winter Wonderland, which made its debut in 2010 with 5,000 visitors, features an outdoor skating rink, benches, evergreen trees and thousands of twinkling lights.

The attraction will offer free admission all season long for the first time this year, with skate rentals $3 each.

The skating rink features 12,000 square feet of synthetic ice, which includes an 800-foot skating trail around the park. The synthetic ice means the attraction can be open no matter the outdoor temperature.

Warming tents, which are open to spectators, will be provided next to the ice rink. Rockford Park District will offer concessions with items such as hot chocolate, cider, coffee, soda, pretzels and hot dogs.

Winter Wonderland will be open from Nov. 23 to Jan. 13, 2013. Regular hours are 6-8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and 3-5 p.m., Sundays. Special holiday break hours are offered from 4-8 p.m., Monday-Friday, Dec. 26-Jan. 4, 2013. The rink is closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
