The Rockford Riveters is a full-contact tackle football team for women based in Rockford. The team will play an eight-game regular season next spring 2013 featuring match-ups against teams from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
This will be the Riveters’ second season. The team plays in the Midwest Division of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL).
Founded in 2000, the IWFL is an international women’s tackle football organization. The IWFL provides women’s tackle football teams the opportunity to play at the top competition tier of their sport, while fostering an environment of goodwill and sportsmanship. Offering participation levels appropriate for all markets, the IWFL has taken the lead in the development of women’s football for future generations. For more, visit www.iwflsports.com.
The Riveters’ mission is to provide women in northwestern Illinois the opportunity to learn and play the sport of tackle football while developing a sports entertainment option that will be family friendly and support the surrounding community.
“Building the team in Rockford, we hope to honor the pioneers of women’s history,” said the Riveters’ Kelley Richardt. “This includes the women represented by Rosie the Riveter who worked in the defense industry and the women who played for the Rockford Peaches in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II. These women forged the way that allows today’s women and our future generations to experience equalities on the gridiron and playing field of life. Because of their efforts, we hope we are able to build the Rockford Riveters to continue this legacy and create our own.”
