Financial support sought for June 22, 2013, Field of Blues festival

Staff Report

Crossroads Blues Society (CBS) is working to support blues fans in the Rockford area with a brand-new blues festival for summer 2013.

In the planning stages since late October and gaining steam is the effort to get the inaugural Field of Blues festival off the ground. Crossroads is seeking funding from local community and corporate sponsors, and they are getting closer to reaching their goal to start scheduling acts.

Planned for Saturday, June 22, 2013, Crossroads is working with the Rockford RiverHawks to make this event a reality.

Crossroads President Steve Jones and RiverHawks President Bryan Wickline have agreed to terms to hold the festival at the ballpark June 22. Advanced tickets will be $10, and the festival will feature five or six blues acts. Discussions with several internationally renowned blues bands is already in progress.

The Crossroads Board of Directors has agreed to start planning the festival in earnest if the group can raise seed money to back the festival. They are about halfway to their goal; any corporation or group interested in becoming a sponsor of this event should contact Jones at or at (779) 537-4006.

Official sponsorship ranges from $15 up to $5,000 for naming rights to the event. A Kickstarter page has been started to allow community members or businesses to pledge support. A goal of $2,000 is sought with a deadline of 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19. As of Dec. 18, three backers had pledged a total of $225 toward the project. Visit

Crossroads is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose aim is to raise money for Blues In The Schools (BITS). BITS is an effort to bring blues musicians into local schools to educate students about the roots of all American popular music and to entertain them.

Crossroads has conducted 108 programs for more than 32,000 students in this area since May 2002. The Field of Blues festival would allow Crossroads to bring the blues back to Rockford, raise funds to help future generations of fans and educate youth about the roots of all American popular music.

Crossroads also holds a festival in Byron, Ill., each summer in August on the weekend prior to Labor Day. This year, they will hold the Fourth Annual Byron Crossroads Blues Festival Saturday, Aug. 24, in downtown Byron.
