January 2, 2013

The Rockford Park District has announced the recent hire of Suzanne Berger as the director of the Rockford Park District Foundation. Berger takes over the position held on an interim basis by Stacie Scott, chief financial officer (CFO), who led the foundation for three years. Scott will continue in her other role at the district as CFO.

From 2000 to 2010, Berger served as vice president of institutional advancement at Rock Valley College (RVC), where she led fund development and implemented three major capital campaigns that raised millions of dollars in gifts and pledges. She also worked at Black Hawk College in Moline, Ill., as director of development, and Spoon River College in Canton, Ill., as director of marketing and resource development.

Park District Executive Director Tim Dimke said: “Berger has 40-plus years of experience in securing and maintaining partnerships with donors. The mission of the Rockford Park District Foundation is to assist the Rockford Park District in securing philanthropic support and also to enhance awareness of the district’s benefits to the community. Berger’s passion for our community and experience in successful capital campaigns will have a very positive impact on the Rockford Park District Foundation.”

Since 1994, the Rockford Park District Foundation has raised more than $40 million to help offset the cost of district projects and programs. Recent successes include Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, where all construction-related expenses for the conservatory project were funded by private donations, along with state and private grants. The foundation also secured $1,429,500 needed for the Eclipse Lagoon Restoration Project and raised money for the David F. Johnson Accessible Fishing Pier Project and Olson Swedish Heritage Park.

Berger will begin her new role in the Rockford Park District Foundation Jan. 7. A welcome reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Webbs Norman Center Board Room, 401 S. Main St., Rockford.
