Man sentenced to 18 years for 2012 robbery of 76-year-old woman

Robert Barr, 61, pled guilty and was sentenced to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of robbery.
April 22, 2012, the victim, a 76-year-old woman, went to the ATM machine at 621 N. Main St. in Rockford. She withdrew money from the ATM. A man approached her and grabbed her and yelled, “Give me the money!” He then wrapped his arm around her neck and started to strangle her. He then threw her to the ground and took her money. The victim was later able to pick the defendant out of a photo lineup.
Robbery is normally a class 2 felony, but because of the victim’s age is enhanced to a class 1 felony. Class X sentencing applied because of prior convictions and is punishable by six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and three years mandatory supervised release.
