Four die in house fire on 10th Avenue in Rockford

Four people have died after an overnight house fire at 1625 10th Ave., Rockford.
According to reports, the fire at the two-story, single-family home broke out after midnight, Monday, Jan. 7. Investigators believe the fire may have been caused by an electrical problem, although the investigation is ongoing.
The fire reportedly started around 12:30 a.m. in the family’s Christmas tree. A survivor attempted to douse the blaze with water, but was unable to stop the flames from spreading. The home was completely engulfed with flames by the time firefighters arrived.
The victims, who all died of smoke inhalation on the second floor of the home, are Sharon Cashatt, 61; Douglas Cashatt, 21; Dominick Cashatt, 13; and 10-month-old Isabella Gonzalez.
Sharon Cashatt was the mother to Douglas and Dominick and grandmother to Isabella. She adopted Dominick when his biological father (Sharon’s son) gave him up for adoption.
Two adults in their 20s were reportedly able to escape the fire through a window and are being treated at a local hospital.
Stephen Cashatt, 41, another son of Sharon’s, died at the home in November 2012.
