Naomi Tutu to lead Jan. 16 event on racism at Rockford College

Naomi Tutu, third daughter of South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife Nomalizo, will lead “Truth & Reconciliation: Healing the Wounds of Racism” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Rockford College’s Maddox Theater.
The event is free and open to the public. Seats may be reserved at ywca.org/rockford/truth-2013 [1].
During the event, Tutu will lead a viewing and interactive discussion of Long Night’s Journey Into Day, a documentary of post-Apartheid South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
This global perspective on racism will inspire conversations and healing at a local level.
Tutu founded and was the chairman of the Tutu Foundation, which from 1985 until 1990 helped South African refugees in African countries. The foundation gave refugees scholarships so they could learn skills that would make them self-supporting while in exile as well as preparing them for constructive roles in the free South Africa.
Tutu is program coordinator for the Race Relations Institute at Fisk University. The institute is charged with focusing on the problem of racism in the global community. She has received numerous awards and honors from different organizations such as the California State Legislature, the Kentucky State Branches of the NAACP, the Boston City Council, Outstanding Young Women of America, Who’s Who of Africans in America and Dollars and Sense magazine.
