Park District commissioner removed from April ballot

An objection filed by Julie Elliott against Nathaniel Martin contended that Martin did not have his nomination papers properly completed.
Michael Scheurich, the Rockford Park District’s legal counsel, reviewed the process and instructions given each candidate, and advised that the local election official performed her proper legal responsibility in accepting and processing the paperwork.
Commissioner Martin was appointed in 1995 and served until 1997. He was elected to serve again in 1999, and re-elected again in 2007. He served as president of the Park District Board from 2004 to 2007, and is a trustee on the board for the Illinois Association of Park Districts.
“Nate has been a true advocate for providing programs and services for youth, and in particular youth at risk,” said Jack L. Armstrong, president of the Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners. “He has been a champion of developing strong partnerships with the school district, Booker Washington Center, and providing free and reduced-fee services to keep young people occupied in positive leisure activities. Nate Martin has built a legacy that will live on in this organization for many years to come, and we will celebrate his many accomplishments. On a personal note, I’d like to say that Nate Martin has been a friend of mine for many years, as a school principal and fellow educator.”
