Sounds Of Good News (SOGN) Productions invites all to attend their Seventh Annual “Let Freedom Ring!” (a musical community celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day). The concert will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St., Rockford.
This celebration will feature the Young Eagles Soaring Inspirational Choir, as well as presentations by Ms. Betty Pumphrey, a pianist and singer, and long-time associate of SOGN, and the St. Paul Lutheran School K-Fourth grade music class students. A special “Young Eagle Star (YES) Award will be given to a student in tribute to the legacy of Chicago legend Julian Swain, a noted choreographer and dancer who performed ballet and modern and ethnic dance. In 1971, he founded the Julian Swain Inner City Dance Theatre at Malcolm X College. He was also affiliated with Bill Doll of the Greater Rockford Barbershop Chorus and sang with the Tag-A-Longs, a local quartet. He also received the Black Theatre Alliance Award, among other honors.
Special guest speaker will be Sgt. Carla Redd-Miller of the Rockford Police Department. This year’s theme is “Think About It!” (“I’ve Got an Attitude of Gratitude”).
The concert is free to the public.Donations will benefit the Young Eagles Success (YES) Club Vision of Character Development & Excellence for kids using music.
