SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State Rep. Chuck Jefferson, D-Rockford, was selected by his peers to serve as an assistant house majority leader in the Illinois House of Representatives’ 98th General Assembly.
“The position of assistant majority leader is a great opportunity because it allows me to bring Rockford’s perspective to the forefront of significant discussions,” Jefferson said. “Being chosen for this post for the third consecutive time is an honor. I am humbled to have the continued respect and confidence of my colleagues.”
Before becoming a state representative, Jefferson served in the United State Army, held a post on the Winnebago County Board and was actively involved in local nonprofits focusing on disadvantaged children and urban development. Last session, Jefferson championed several bills supporting veterans and senior citizens. Jefferson additionally backed many bipartisan reductions in state spending to address budget shortfalls; however, he voted against slashing Medicaid, eliminating Circuit Breaker and expansive cuts to vital programs.
“The state is facing historic challenges, and we must find a way to balance the budget without abandoning the most vulnerable in our society,” Jefferson said. “Only by working together will we be able to address the numerous issues before us including improving job opportunities and reducing painstaking foreclosures that plague our neighborhoods.”
