Man faces sentencing after pleading guilty to 2011 murder at Summerdale Park

Leonard Fricks, 33, has pled guilty to first-degree murder in the May 20, 2011, shooting death of Martin Jefferson.
May 20, 2011, Rockford police responded to a report of a shooting at Summerdale Park. Upon arrival, they found Jefferson lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
Jefferson was transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wounds.
Jefferson went to the park with another individual after the two had agreed to fight. During the course of the fight between Jefferson and the other individual, Fricks pulled out a handgun and shot Jefferson. Several witnesses stated neither Jefferson nor the other individual had any weapons.
First-degree murder is a class M felony, which has a sentencing range of 20-60 years plus enhancement of 20 years for personally discharging a firearm in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The sentencing court date is 2:30 p.m., Feb. 22, in courtroom 478 in front of Judge Rosemary Collins.
