Kate’s Pie Shop celebrates National Pie Day
Wednesday, Jan. 23, is National Pie Day. The American Pie Council created this event in 1986 to commemorate Crisco’s 75th anniversary of “serving foods to families everywhere.”
Pie is one of America’s favorite desserts, appealing to most people regardless of age, gender or ethnic background. In the United States and Canada, the most popular pies are apple, cherry, pumpkin, lemon meringue and chocolate.
Pies enjoy a long history in the United States. With the average American eating six slices of pie every year (the Midwest may be more), it is only fitting that the United States should dedicate one day out of the year devoted to celebrating pie.
There are so many ways to celebrate National Pie Day: baking for family and friends, eating all you want, entering a pie-making or eating contest, throwing a charity event or auction, and making pie with children. Here in Rockford, if you want real fresh, old-school pie, there is only one call to make. Call Kate, the Pie Lady.
Kate Sullivan, owner and baker at Kate’s Pie Shop, 406 N. Main St., Rockford, has been baking pies since the late ’80s and spent the past several years perfecting her dough from scratch.
Unlike most pies baked at home or in bakeries, Kate never uses vegetable shortening, choosing to bake each pie with fresh, natural ingredients and old recipes.
“I’m proud of my crust recipe, and by old-school, we mean pies baked the old-fashioned way, with leaf lard and real butter,” Sullivan said. “Our fruit is always fresh, never oversweetened, and we never use anything from a can. I bake each pie with care.”
Kate has been offering home delivery to friends and family since 2011. She premiered Kate’s Pie Shop at the Rockford City Market and Edgebrook Farmers Market in 2012, and always delivers in the Pie Lady character.
“I like comfort food served with a touch of humor and nostalgia,” she said. “I have fun with my customers, and it’s something unique; it’s pie happiness!”
