Rockford firefighters responded to two afternoon fires Jan. 28.
Firefighters responded to the first fire at 3:02 p.m., Jan. 28, at 501 Kilburn Ave.
The first units to respond reported smoke and fire showing from a second-floor window. They deployed a 1-1/2-inch, pre-connected hose line and began an interior attack. The fire was brought under control within 5 minutes.
There was heavy smoke throughout the building. Firefighters ventilated and searched the entire building, finding no one inside. The building was vacant and condemned. There were no injuries reported, and the fire is under investigation. Total damage is estimated at $40,000.
At 3:34 p.m., Jan. 28, firefighters responded to a possible incinerator fire at Longwood Plaza, 1055 E. State St., Rockford.
First units on the scene observed occupants evacuating the five-story residential structure with the alarm system activated. A heater in the basement stairwell was involved with fire. The sprinkler extinguished the fire.
Smoke was evident on the southern end of the building on all five floors. The structure was ventilated, and no injuries were reported. All occupants returned to their rooms.
Total damage is estimated at $500, and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
