Burpee Museum names Maureen Mall new executive director
Online Staff Report
Rockford’s Burpee Museum of Natural History, internationally recognized for its paleontology field expeditions and exhibits, announced Feb. 4 that the Board of Trustees has appointed Maureen R. Mall as executive director.
A business executive with 20 years of experience, Mall has an extensive background in both the private and nonprofit sectors. She has a proven track record for proficiency in all levels of operations management, product development and leadership.
Throughout her career in the private sector, Mall has increased revenue and income diversification, and is eager to bring this experience to her role as a nonprofit leader.
Mall’s interest in natural sciences led her to volunteer at Burpee Museum for seven years. She has worked in the paleontology lab, participated in field expeditions from 2003 to 2009, and was part of the “Homer” juvenile triceratops discovery team.
“The search committee interviewed several talented candidates, and chose Maureen for her track record in growing businesses, knowledge of the museum and background in anthropology,” said Patti Tumilowicz, Burpee Board of Trustees president.
Mall will begin her new role at Burpee Feb. 11, after leaving her position as business development director at 1up! Software in Kokomo, Ind., where she worked directly with the CEO on long-term strategy and growth, and was involved heavily in helping the company improve their financial position and expand into international markets. Before 1up! Software, she was formerly employed as sales manager for OSF HealthPlans in Rockford, where she grew territory revenue from start-up to more than $10 million annual revenue.
“I’m looking forward to working with the board and staff to lead Burpee in a positive new direction,” said Mall. “One of my first priorities is to assess the current state of the organization and its assets, and then engage the board in developing a strategic direction for our future.”
She is completing a master’s in law from Champlain College, Burlington, Vt., attended Rock Valley College, and is a graduate of Beloit College, where she was awarded a bachelor of arts in anthropology, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. She completed museum studies courses at Beloit College and seminars at the Milwaukee Public Museum, and through Campbell Center.
