Prep basketball: Stull emerges from Boylan wreckage

A team loses three starters like the Boylan Titans did, and it would be a major cause of concern for their season.
Boylan was not happy about the losses, but they were not too worried. The injuries gave Brock Stull a chance to shine.
As a sophomore, Stull was known mostly as a shooter, a major threat from deep. It is a role he likely would have filled on most nights this season, but with injuries, Stull was asked to take over on offense most nights, and he responded.
“Brock has been outstanding,” Boylan Head Coach Mike Winters said. “He’s picked us up and carried us.”
When the injuries piled up, one thing that did do was give everyone a little more attention in practice. Stull said the extra work helped him with his confidence when more was put on his plate.
“My game has really improved with coaches helping me out,” Stull said. “They kept giving me the ball, and we let things happen.”
While the season has not gone exactly how the team planned in November, the emergence of Stull as a potential conference MVP as a junior has been a big plus.
Coaches felt he may have been their best player all along, but was filling the role he was asked to fill with so much talent on the roster. But Stull has shown his athleticism in addition to his shooting, like on a baseline dunk he threw down against Rockford Auburn.
With players coming back, Stull will spend some time going back to his role as a shooter. But having confidence in his ability to do everything on the floor, with his talented teammates back, and others stepping up around him in their absence, the Titans are dangerous.
“He’s willing to do other things, too,” Winters said. “He doesn’t have to be the guy, and he’ll be the first to tell you that. He is willing to give it up to teammates that are open.”
