Rockford Area Arts Council has announced a regional contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.
Feb. 12, 20 students from Rockford Auburn, Freeport, Rockford Guilford, Rockford Jefferson and Rockford Roosevelt will participate in the northern Illinois Poetry Out Loud regional contest at Jefferson High School, 4145 Samuelson Road, Rockford.
The first- and second-place winners of this competition advance to Illinois’ State Poetry Out Loud competition, being held Friday, March 8, in Springfield. The state champion advances to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals April 28-30 in Washington, D.C., where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
The competition, presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in partnership with the Illinois Arts Council, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
Christopher Sims will serve as master of ceremonies, and Tim Murphy, Katherine Hopkins, Dylan Garcia, Marcus Lara, David Causey and Carole Carbone will be judges.
The regional competition runs 7-9 p.m., Feb. 12, at Jefferson High School. Attendance is free and open to the public.
