MONROE, Wis. — Steve Streiff, Ernie Halbheer, Gert Waelchli and Greg Smith are ready for some fun and mischief at Fasnacht, the Swiss version of Mardi Gras, which is scheduled for 1-5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Grand Hall of the Turner Hall of Monroe, Wis.

The 2013 Swiss Heritage Series of the Turner Hall of Monroe kicks off Sunday, Feb. 10, with its annual Fasnacht Masquerade/Costume Dance. A great way to beat the winter doldrums as well as get a taste of a fun Swiss tradition, the dance will be played by special arrangement with the popular Greg Anderson Band from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Grand Hall.

A fun event the whole family can enjoy, masks and/or costumes are encouraged, but not required, with one of the highlights of the afternoon being the taking of a group picture for all who come in costume.

At-the-door admission is $10, with children in grades 8 or under accompanied by a parent or guardian $2.

In addition to the dance itself, admission includes finger foods and hors d’oeuvres, with bar service available.

Fasnacht, Switzerland’s version of Mardi Gras, is a multi-day celebration before the beginning of Lent, featuring drum and piccolo bands, mimes, out-of-tune brass bands, local humor and satire, food, drink and costumed revelers wandering the streets. Turner Hall’s Fasnacht celebration, although on a smaller scale, captures the fun and spirit of the Swiss tradition.

The Turner Hall of Monroe, 1217 17th Ave., Monroe, Wis. — two blocks from the downtown square near the Monroe Middle School — is listed on the National and State registers of historic places. A 501(c)(3) non-profit Swiss heritage and community center, the facility is handicapped-accessible.
