Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon will not seek re-election

Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (D) has announced she will not seek re-election in 2014, but will likely run for a different political office.
Simon refused to elaborate on her future plans at a news conference Feb. 13, although she did say she would make an announcement about her future in a few months.
In written statement, Simon said she wants to serve the people of Illinois in a role where she can have “an even greater impact.”
Prior to serving as lieutenant governor, Simon — the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon — was an associate at the firm O’Niell & Colvin in Carbondale from 1992 to 1994; Jackson County Assistant State’s Attorney from 1994 to 1998; and a law professor at Southern Illinois University School of Law from 2000 to 2005. She served on the Carbondale City Council from 2003 to 2007, and unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Carbondale in 2007.
According to the Gov. Pat Quinn/Simon campaign, the pairing of Quinn and Simon is appropriate, as the two worked together successfully in achieving the passage of campaign finance law, and had many shared goals and political viewpoints.
Simon was sworn in as lieutenant governor Jan. 10, 2011.
