Help ensure industrial animal agriculture is held accountable for its pollution

Pollution from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) is a major threat to our nation’s waterways. These operations house thousands of animals and generate tons of animal waste, which, when not properly managed, can impair water quality, kill fish, cause algae blooms and contaminate drinking water sources.
Despite the risks that this pollution poses to public health and our environment, the big animal agriculture industry has continuously fought efforts to regulate CAFOs, and the current rules largely allow a “catch me if you can” structure. To ensure that industrial animal agriculture is held accountable for its pollution, enforcement of existing CAFO rules must be a top priority.
Every several years, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance chooses priorities for its enforcement efforts. The EPA is now seeking public input on what those priorities should be for 2014-2016. We must make sure that CAFO pollution is on that list. Please contact the EPA now and let them know that federal oversight is absolutely critical to keeping CAFO waste from contaminating our waters. [2]
