Presence Saint Joseph Center to dedicate new addition
Online Staff Report
FREEPORT, Ill. — Presence Saint Joseph Center, formerly known as Provena St. Joseph Center, 659 E. Jefferson St., Freeport, will hold a blessing ceremony for its new 16-bed Medicare-certified short-stay rehabilitation wing at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 25. The Most Rev. Bishop David J. Malloy, Bishop of the Rockford Diocese, will officiate.
“We planned this new addition to better serve the needs of the community,” said Michelle Lindeman, administrator of resence Saint Joseph Center. “We added 16 private rooms to accommodate the many patients who need short-term rehabilitation. We also will begin converting six semi-private skilled nursing rooms in our existing facility to private rooms.” Presence Saint Joseph Center provides rapid, intensive rehabilitation that allows patients who have had hip or knee replacements, or other types of surgery, to return home and get back to work as quickly – and safely – as possible. “The new rehabilitation wing is just one more tool that helps us provide rehabilitation to the ever-increasing number of people who need short-term care, so they can more quickly return home and to their other normal daily activities,” Lindeman explained. “Our patients and other residents will also benefit from the additional private rooms, which will allow them to remain as independent and healthy as possible for a longer period of time,” she added.
As the senior market for short-stay rehabilitation has grown and as medical evidence of the effectiveness of private rooms in reducing infections and speeding recovery has demonstrated, the demands for additional amenities, particularly private rooms with private baths, has emerged as a critical factor for post-acute care after a hospital stay.
Presence Saint Joseph Center, part of Presence Health, offers a range of care, services and support options in addition to short-term rehabilitation, inculding an adult day center. Patients who receive short-term therapy but who may require some additional assistance after discharge often utilize the adult day center to continue receiving some therapy, and also to socialize with new friends. The campus also provides respite care, community and supportive living, and skilled and intermediate nursing care. Presence Life Connections, which operates or manages 29 rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing homes, independent living and assisted living communities, day care centers and home health programs throughout Illinois, invested $2.7 million in the Presence Saint Joseph project. Total costs are estimated at $3.2 million, and a capital campaign is under way to raise the additional $500,000 in restricted funds, to be used solely for this project, from members of the Freeport community. “The Presence Saint Joseph Center Advisory Board, made up of members from the community, has been very supportive of our center and of the new addition,” said Lindeman. “The Advisory Board membes recognzie that, to stay competitive, Presence Saint Joseph Center must focus on short-stay rehabilitation services. The addition of the private suites will help us maintain our ability to serve the Freeport area for years to come,” she added.
