The Arc of Winnebago, Boone and Ogle Counties is hosting Equip for Equality in presenting a “Know Your Rights” meeting for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families.
The meeting will be from noon to 2 p.m., Friday, March 8, and a light lunch will be provided. The Arc is at 1222 E. State St., Rockford.
As much as people who love and support them care about their well-being, family and caregivers cannot completely put themselves in the shoes of a person with an intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD).
People with I/DD need to be included in leadership roles to ensure they have a voice in creating meaningful lives and a promising future.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a time for people with I/DD, their families and friends to get involved. A huge part of awareness is telling stories — and the stories of people with I/DD and their families are incredibly powerful. The Arc is inviting everyone interested in speaking out for themselves to attend this meeting.
Equip for Equality is a statewide organization whose mission is “To advance the human and civil rights of children and adults with physical and mental disabilities in Illinois.” It is the only statewide, cross-disability, comprehensive advocacy organization providing self-advocacy assistance, legal services, and disability rights education while also engaging in public policy and legislative advocacy and conducting abuse investigations and other oversight activities.
