Rockford’s Thurgood Marshall wins first place in state chess championship

Rockford’s Thurgood Marshall School finished first in the junior high section at the 2013 Illinois K-8 Chess Championships at Illinois State University in Bloomington, Ill.

Almost 600 K-8 chess players competed Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10, in the tournament. The Marshall team includes Vincent Do, Steven Do, McKinley Torre, Henry Harmon and Kirkland Shun.

Local winners included the following:

· Vincent Do: First place in the junior high section as a fifth-grader playing up. He finished with a perfect score of 7-0, the only player to do so in this section

· Steven Do, an eighth-grader, won a 16th-place trophy in the junior high section

Washington Academy also had three players in attendance: Paranjay Gupta, Ryan Sweeney and Kamalesh Sureshkumar. In the Primary K-2 section, Sureshkumar, a first-grader, won a 19th-place trophy.
