Amped Up Adventure Race series launching season in Rockford April 7
• First in three-race series will begin at YMCA of Rock River Valley Log Lodge April 7
Rockford will host the first of three Amped Up Adventure Races to be held in 2013. The second race will be in Beloit, Wis., May 11, and the final race in Aurora, Ill., June 16.
Be Active Outdoors developed the races to help raise awareness to the tremendous natural assets and outdoor activities that exist in each one of these communities and regions, while at the same time raising funds for important community impact initiatives.
The mission of the Amped Up Adventure Race Series is to inspire a deeper level of commitment to adopting healthier lifestyles through outdoor activity. The Rockford Amped Up Adventure Race is a collaboration between the Rock River Valley YMCA and Be Active Outdoors. Proceeds from the Rockford race will go toward supporting youth outdoor programs of YMCA of Rock River Valley — Camp Winnebago, and will also support development of outdoor experiential education opportunities for students of Rockford public schools.
Each one of the races is the centerpiece of a full weekend of activities with a pre-party and post-party bookending the races, combined with community music and art festivals in each city. In Rockford, the Millennium Center in downtown Rockford will play host to the Rockford Pre-Amped Party from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, April 6, with live music, adventure films, games and entertainment focused on youth, free bike inspections and refreshments to help welcome all the racers and out-of-town visitors. Racers will be able to pick up their race packets during the Pre-Amped Party. The Pre-Amped Party is open to the general public.
The Rockford Amped Up Adventure Race will kick off at 8 a.m., Sunday, April 7, at the YMCA of Rock River Valley Log Lodge, 200 Y Blvd., Rockford. The race goes from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., with award ceremonies at 2 p.m. Racers will run, bike and paddle along, and in, the scenic Rock River, then run through downtown Rockford, in addition to attempting to tackle the signature Amped Up Urban obstacle course. The public is invited to watch the fun at the Amped Up Obstacle Course viewing area. In addition to having the opportunity to try your hand at the mobile climbing wall, attendees can enjoy food, art and other unique offerings at the Amped Up vendor area.
The full race series is sanctioned by the USARA, the primary sanctioning body for adventure racing in the United States. Visit www.ampedupadventurerace.com to become involved, register or find out more information.
