School district releases first bid tied to $139 million referendum

The passage of the Rockford Public School District’s historical $139 million referendum last November is beginning to take shape with the release of the first bid tied to the facility projects.
The district released a bid March 20 to replace all of the windows at East High School, with a project cost estimated at $2 million. The bid is published on DemandStar.com [1], on RPS205.com [2] and in the Rockford Register Star.
“We know 25 percent of the entire district’s natural gas costs are from East High School, West Middle School and Lincoln Middle School,” said Rockford Public School District Chief Operations Officer Todd Schmidt. “East is the largest building, so that’s where we’ll start, and then we’ll replace the windows in the other two schools next year.”
Schmidt said the new high-efficiency windows will have a partial tint to help block out sunlight, heat transfer and glare. The bid also includes masonry, plastering and painting surrounding the windows. Schmidt confirmed the new windows meet the necessary guidelines to maintain the buildings’ historical integrity.
“The image of our school buildings reflects pride in our district,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Willis. “We need to improve the outside and inside of our schools, and ultimately transition our district to provide 21st century learning environments in all schools to maximize student success.”
Schmidt said the bid will go to the lowest responsible bidder, and he plans to present his vendor recommendation to the school board April 10. Additional bids are scheduled to be released the first week of April.
