Sustainable landscaping series begins April 8 in Oregon, Ill.

OREGON, Ill. — Sustainable landscaping is part of a growing national effort in the landscaping industry. Sustainable landscapes conserve and improve the environment, are esthetically pleasing and save money. Why not think about making the landscape of your home more sustainable?

University of Illinois Extension Educator Candice Miller will present a series of programs focused on various aspects of sustainable landscaping. The series, which begins Monday, April 8, at the Ogle County Extension office at 421 W. Pines Road, in Oregon, Ill., will cover three different sustainable landscaping topics. The fee for this program is $5 per session or $12 for the entire series.

Following are the three sessions included in the series:

Monday, April 8, 5-6 p.m.: “Introduction to Landscape Planning and Design” — Extension Horticulture Educator Candice Miller and a local landscape professional will offer an introduction into basic landscape design techniques and sustainable hardscapes installation. Personalized, hands-on advice will be given throughout the series about creating a landscape plan.

Monday, April 22, 5-6 p.m.: “Sustainable Landscaping 101” — Sustainable landscapes are responsive to the environment, re-generative, and they can actively contribute to the development of healthy communities. Learn about various aspects of sustainable landscaping, including low-energy landscaping, sustainable weed control techniques, and some of the most low-maintenance plants to choose.

Monday, May 6, 5-6 p.m.: “Water Efficient Landscaping” — Want to make your landscape more water efficient? Learn how to install a rain garden and plant a xeriscape. Proper mulching techniques for water conservation and water storage irrigation options will also be discussed.
