Guest Column: Who is really to blame for Sandy Hook?

Imagine submitting a fraudulent tax return a few days from now. Further, imagine that the IRS finds out you lied on your return. What would happen? At the minimum, you would expect to receive a letter demanding payment, or announcing an audit. At worst, IRS agents could break down your door and haul you away in handcuffs.

Now, imagine a psychopath tries to buy a gun and fails the Instant Background Check? The government now knows the psycho broke the law. Here’s how: To buy a gun from a federally-licensed dealer, the Federal Form 4473 must first be completed. The Instant Background Check is next, but to make it to the Instant Check, a felon or psycho must first lie on his 4473, which is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and fines.

That’s the law, right now! No new laws are needed to lock up these criminals today. See for yourself at http://www.atf.gov/files/forms/download/atf-f-4473-1.pdf.

So, what should you expect if you were this psycho or felon? A visit from law enforcement? A SWAT team visiting your house in the middle of the night?

How about absolutely nothing? How about your government just ignoring a felon or nut-job trying to buy a gun? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Well, it happened more than 80,000 times last year. That’s right, there were more than 80,000 people who were rejected by the Instant Background Check system last year. Your government followed up on only 44. Talk about dereliction of duty! It makes me sick when I hear these people who we elected call themselves “leaders.”

Now, 80,000 sounds like a lot, but if you allow one hour each to do a follow-up phone call and a records search, that breaks down to 39 government employees per year! Barack Obama has more people than that fretting over his play dates with Tiger Woods!

One rejection, Adam Lanza, was part of that 80,000, and sadly not one of the 44. If your government had followed up and enforced the law like they are sworn to do, the Newtown Massacre would never have happened. At the minimum, his mother might have been a bit more careful how she secured her guns.

When confronted with the fact that the government fails to enforce current law, Vice President Joe Biden admonished the questioner with the statement, “We don’t have time to enforce the law.” And 26 adults and children died because Joe Biden couldn’t be bothered to enforce the law!

I wonder if the Newtown parents realize Joe Biden and Barack Obama are directly culpable for their children’s deaths through their failure to do their sworn duty to enforce the law? Remember that part about swearing to “protect and defend the Constitution”?

Our government spares no expense tracking down and extracting their tax money from us. But to enforce our gun laws or combat criminal gangs … sorry, there’s no money. But, there is ALWAYS time for new laws — mountains and mountains of new laws.

Ever notice how politicians never talk about the problems they solved, and they never stop talking about new laws they passed? Solving a problem and passing a law is NOT the same thing …not even close! New laws, unenforced, are just a cheap excuse for doing nothing!

If politicians on both sides of the aisle were truly interested in safety, they would be ramrodding bills through Congress demanding ENFORCEMENT of existing law. They would be demanding hearings to expose negligent government employees. They would be outraged over this failure to enforce.

So, where’s the outrage? Has even a single politician submitted a bill demanding enforcement of our current gun laws? What happened to the push to prevent the mentally ill from obtaining firearms? Does anyone talk about that anymore? All I hear about are bans on the law-abiding.

Enforce existing laws first! Then, after we see how well they work, we can modify them so they work better. Piling laws, one on top of the other, and hoping something sticks is failed leadership!

But really, this isn’t about safety or leadership. Politicians are simply posturing for 2014; collecting sound-bites for their infomercials. Clearly, they are NOT interested in safety. They are either putting their careers first, or they are working to disarm law-abiding citizens; converting us into a Euro-style population of helpless sheep. Sandy Hook is only an excuse.
