Staff Report

FREEPORT, Ill. — March on down to the Lindo Theatre for the 1962 musical classic The Music Man, starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, at 1 and 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 24.

Movie admission to this film is $5 or free as a bonus to anyone who purchased the entire series to ’50s Science Fiction Films. Tickets are available at the Lindo Theatre box office, 115 S. Chicago Ave., Freeport, Ill.

This concludes the sixth classic film series at the Lindo, and the next series is scheduled for fall 2013, with titles to be announced.

Confidence man Harold Hill arrives at staid River City intending to cheat the community with his standard scam of offering to equip and train a boys’ marching band, then skip town with the money. Things go awry when he falls for the town librarian and tries to divert her from exposing him. Although he has no musical skills, he inadvertently enriches the town with a love of music. This critically-acclaimed film won an Academy Award for Best Musical Score (Meredith Wilson) and was nominated in five other categories.

The series of ’50s Science Fiction Films was selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the speech and communications instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before the movie and a discussion led by Dr. Finch and Wenzel following the movie. Movie-goers are encouraged to stay after the film to participate in this exchange.
