Anderson Japanese Gardens opens for season May 1

Rockford’s Anderson Japanese Gardens, 318 Spring Creek Road, will open for the season Wednesday, May 1.

Garden visitors are encouraged to visit during normal garden hours, which are 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday. Admission rates are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (62 years and older), $6 for students, and free for children 5 and younger. The gardens will be open, rain or shine, until Oct. 31.

To celebrate the beginning of its season, Anderson Japanese Gardens will host an Opening Day Celebration Saturday, May 4, to provide participants the chance to engage in hands-on activities and see authentic Japanese performances and demonstrations.

This year, opening day activities are themed to honor Children’s Day, a traditional Japanese holiday held May 5 to respect children’s personalities and celebrate their happiness. All festivities will take place in Anderson Japanese Gardens’ Pavilion or Visitor Center. Guests will be able to choose from the following activities:

Origami — Hands-on demonstrations of the Japanese art of paper folding;

Calligraphy — Demonstrations of the artistic writing style;

Carp flags — Hands-on opportunity for families to make a carp flag in celebration of Children’s Day;

Iris and day lily planting — Shoots will be provided by J. Carlson Growers for families to plant together and take home.

Bujinkan performances — Traditional Japanese martial art;

Makko Ho performances — Traditional Japanese martial art;

Top spinning — Hands-on activity for families to enjoy this favorite Japanese pastime;

Kendama — Hands-on activity for families featuring a popular Japanese game;

Bonsai display — Bonsais on display from Rock River Valley Bonsai Society;

Japanese Folk Music — Acoustic guitar performance by New York native Hiroy Tsukamoto;

Okinawa dance performance;

Dry rake gravel garden — A hands-on opportunity to rake an Anderson Japanese Gardens’ dry rock garden; and

Guest House tours — Tours of Anderson Japanese Gardens’ Guest House.
