Online Staff Report
Quilters and art patrons will get their kicks out of Route 66-themed quilts at this year’s Global Connections Quilt Show presented by Sinnissippi Quilters at the Rockford Indoor Sports Center, 8800 Riverside Blvd., Rockford.
A collection of 56 quilts honoring the historic highway that spans eight states will be part of the quilt show, which is held two days — 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, May 4, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday May 5. Admission is $6.
Local quilter Phyllis K. Campbell of Rockford created Illinois’ “Luna Café,” which is one of the winning quilts in the traveling exhibit.
In addition to the Route 66 quilts, more than 300 other quilts of both traditional and modern style will be featured. The show will also include “Wearable Postcards” by Stephanie Nordlin of Poplar Grove, Ill. Her quilted garment “postcards” are national award winners, each telling a story about a place she has traveled or dreamed about. They include applique, embroidery, beading and her trademark “Luxury Fur.”
The Quilt Show also includes quilting demonstrations, vendors selling quilt-related items, quilt appraisals, silent auction, raffle quilt and a Resale Boutique for bargain shopping. The show location at the Sports Center has the SkyBox Restaurant & Bar serving food plus gives an overview looking out over the entire show. See www.SinnissippiQuilters.org.
Sinnissippi Quilters has been serving the community for 33 years through education and donations to charities. A favorite project is making baby quilts for local hospital neonatal units, which will also be on display.
