Rockford Christian Schools awarded LEED Silver Certification
Online Staff Report
Rockford Christian Schools was awarded LEED Silver Certification April 23 for the addition of their new 25,000-square-foot Diane Bertrand Science, Technology and Humanities Center that opened in August 2012.
Brent Johnson, president and CEO of Ringland-Johnson Construction and lead contractor for the project, said: “LEED Silver is an amazing accomplishment that took tireless planning and execution during construction and massive documentation ever since the project was completed last summer, until award distinction was received yesterday. Rockford Christian Schools should be proud to be one of an elite few private K-12 schools in the nation to receive this distinction! The school is showing the importance of sustainability and encouraging students to preserve our planet’s resources.”
Rockford Christian Schools broke ground on the new Science, Technology and Humanities Center in August 2011. This new building houses a 178-seat distance learning auditorium, two additional technology labs, advanced Science and Physical Science laboratories, upper-level mathematics classrooms, and a large “dirty lab” that allows for additional programming in robotics assembly, physics demonstrations, diesel engine analysis and other scientific and engineering studies that cannot be housed in traditional classrooms.
The building also includes a multimedia center with a green room, two additional art studios, and a rooftop environmental studies classroom and wind turbines for supplying power and studying alternate sources of power.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building program that provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. Participation in the LEED process demonstrates leadership, innovation, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. LEED provides building owners and operators the tools they need to immediately impact their building’s performance and bottom line, while providing healthy indoor spaces for a building’s occupants.
