Online Staff Report
Shelter Care Ministries’ Annual Spring Luncheon will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at Tebala Shrine Temple, 7910 Newburg Road, Rockford. Tickets are $35 per person or tables of eight for $280.
The theme for this year’s fund-raising luncheon is “Helping Hands … Caring Hearts.” Shelter Care will unveil what has been dreamed about for the past year.
Paul Logli will emcee the event with music provided by Harlan Jefferson. A Helping Hand Giving Tree will be the central attraction in the room. It will give attendees the opportunity to make a special donation to one of the four programs under Shelter Care’s umbrella of ministries available to homeless families and individuals, children and the mentally ill.
New this year are three raffles: the first featuring a beautiful, handmade quilt; the second a Janome sewing machine; and the last, two wall hanging quilts.
The ever-popular Spring MarketPlace will feature hanging baskets, pottery, jams and relishes, gourmet granola, potholders, candy and spring décor.
Shelter Care Ministries was established in 1984 by Emmanuel Episcopal Church as a response to the needs of a growing homeless population. The programs have expanded since then to include Jubilee Center, a daytime drop-in center serving individuals with chronic mental illness, emergency/transitional or permanent supportive housing programs for families that are homeless, a drop-in day center (MAYA’S House) for homeless children and an Employment Program, which prepares clients for the job market by providing classes, coaching and support.
