Archeology explored at Stephenson County Museum

FREEPORT, Ill. — Stephenson County Museum, 1440 S. Carroll Ave., Freeport, Ill., is offering a chance for children and adults to get their hands dirty by doing some basic archeology.

Cassandra Steele will present several workshops for the young and young at heart. She is finishing a master’s degree in anthropology at Northern Illinois University and has participated in several “digs” in Sicily as part of her education.

Courses offered at the museum include the following:

Archeology for Kids — Children ages 6-11 can spend a Saturday morning learning some basic techniques and practices of archeologists. June 15 and July 13, 8 a.m.-noon. Cost is $35 for Freeport Park District residents; $45 for non-residents. Cost includes materials, plus water or juice for mid-morning break. Sunscreen and head cover strongly suggested.

Archeology Basics — Spend a Saturday morning learning some of the basic techniques and practices of archeological digs. Ages 12 and older. June 29 and July 27, 8 a.m.-noon. Cost is $35 for Freeport Park District residents; $45 for non-residents. Cost includes materials, plus water or juice for mid-morning break. Sunscreen and head cover strongly suggested.

Dig This” Archeology Camp — For ages 12 and older. Participants will have the opportunity to excavate on the grounds of the Oscar Taylor Home, an 1857 mansion in Freeport, Ill. Monday-Thursday, June 24-27, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. $150 if registered by May 30, $175 if registered after May 30. Cost includes materials, plus water or juice for mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks. Participants will need to bring a sack lunch each day. Sunscreen and head cover strongly suggested.
