One Green Thing: 10 activities (green/retro) that could create jobs

Whether you were “green” before the color was fashionable or whether you’re just ready to find the “shade” that works best for you, here’s information about doing just “one green thing.”

From an article on Mother Nature Network, they say some things that were retro (and green) are “re-trending.” I think some make for great job opportunities.

1. Milk delivery is back (home delivery of milk, butter, etc.), and it is happening here in Illinois from the Oberweiss Company of North Aurora.

2. Home births are up 29 percent. Is midwife training far behind?

3. Meat butchering … wonder where you get the training?

4. Using an old-fashioned typewriter. And I just threw away the white-out. What was I thinking?

5. Matchmaking. Article says some are tired of “Internet dating.” Is there a school for this?

6. Frontier skills — Now here’s something for me — canning (ask me about watermelon pickles), cheese-making and beekeeping. Will these be on the list of classes at Rock Valley, along with bow-making, bone-working, shoemaking and stone tool making? (Or maybe they are already there?)

7. Barn-raising — I have to ponder, how many barns need to be raised in today’s world? But if you remember, thanks to a lot of effort and an enthusiastic supporter, Rockford “saved a barn” at Aldeen Golf Course.

8. Using a vintage sewing machine. I never stopped, but my featherweight was NOT vintage when I started using it!

9. Gold prospecting — Is there gold in them thar’ hills for those who know how, those who teach or those who own the land it is on?

10. Old-time transportation is also of interest. Not sure how to capitalize on that, unless we follow Oklahoma City’s model — flood a few blocks and create a new tourist destination?
