Vince’s Notes: Local power-pop band Groove Weasel returns to the stage

Groove Weasel

By Vince Chiarelli

In 2010, the band Groove Weasel decided to have a reunion show. Well, their fans wanted more, and the band has heard their calls. They have done a handful of shows since the reunion, and will be performing this Saturday, June 22, at Hope and Anchor, 5040 N. Second St., Loves Park, Ill.

Groove Weasel began in 1992 when brothers Rick and Dave Heffner joined Jim Koomar to form a power-pop group appropriate for any venue. If you were on the scene in the early 1990s, you may remember Groove Weasel for its eclectic songs and unforgettable stage antics. The band also won four Rockford Area Music Industry (RAMI) awards in its eight-year run.

If you are wondering what type of music they play, I think the best way to describe it is what Rick Heffner told me: “Power pop at its finest. Straight-forward, down-your-throat power pop music.” Such music includes covered songs from Cheap Trick, Material Issue, The Elvis Brothers, Gogo’s, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Bodeans, Ramones, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, the Beatles, The Beat and many more.

Groove Weasel not only played cover music, but also wrote originals such as “Just Kill Me” and “Lying,” which I have played on Rockford College Radio local hour shows. These guys are very talented and have opened shows for the Elvis Brothers, Edwin McCain and a host of regional acts.

In 2000, the band disbanded, but you can still witness their great stage show this Saturday. I was lucky to be able to open for the band at their reunion show, and that night, they truly engaged and amazed everyone in the room.

If you would like to find out more about the band and hear some of their music, tune in to my Rockford College Radio interview with Rick Heffner and Al Altamore, who was with Groove Weasel for five years.
