Find Your Space: The beauty of summer can be found at Womanspace!
By Liz Kulevich
Womanspace Marketing Coordinator
The Womanspace gardens, labyrinth and prairie are especially beautiful in summer, and we’ve got some great outdoor events to show you what I’m talking about!
The best way for kids and adults of all ages to check out our grounds is our annual Fairy Festival from 5 to 8 p.m., Aug. 3. We’ll have entertainment by the Rockford Dance Company, and your little fairy can create a fairy wand and crown to take home. Guests can arrive early at 4:30 p.m. and enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Don’t forget your wings!
This Saturday, July 13, is our Eco-Poetics Writershop in our outdoor Anjali Pavilion. From 1 to 4 p.m., you’ll be guided in expressing nature’s voice through poetry. Stick around from 4 to 6 p.m., and hear the talent of our local poets at Poetry in the Pavilion. Another way to experience this great space is our Medusa Drums workshop from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 17. You’ll learn the culture behind the African Drums, as well as a full rhythm and song.
Let the beauty of summer inspire your art with our Chalk Pastels and Explore Sculpture art classes, which both start July 18. Explore mixed-media techniques in Fearless Art Journaling from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 14, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 17.
Aug. 11 is our Community Raku Firing. Artists are welcome to bring two pieces of fired, unglazed pottery to glaze and fire in our outdoor raku kiln. Turn a piece of nature into a piece of art in our Hypertufa Garden Art class Aug. 17, where you’ll make leaf castings using real leaves like hosta, rhubarb or burdock. Experience the art of others at our Things With Wings exhibit opening reception this Friday, July 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in our William Reif Gallery.
We’ve got some great programs for kids this summer, too. Help us create homes for those fairies who will be visiting us for the Fairy Festival with our Build a Fairy House artshop from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 20.
Fashion Camp 101 runs from 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 5-8. Students will design their own mini clothing line, choose their color palette, create a textile design and much more. (For those adults who’d like to join in the fun, we’ve got our Fashion Design for Aspiring, Adventerous Adults class Aug. 7.)
Have a kid who loves to draw and loves cartoons? Bring them to our Cartoons & Caricatures class for a morning of fun, learning and drawing! Just in time for the new school year is our U-Journal class Aug. 17. Kids can decorate a binder, journal or notebook with our supplies, or they can bring in their own to add a personal touch!
We’re, of course, keeping with our tried and true classes and programs through the summer. Our monthly Women’s Wellness class meets today, Wednesday, July 10, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Another session of morning and evening yoga classes begins Thursday, July 11, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Both classes may be held outside, weather permitting. This month’s Supper & Film July 22 will feature the movie Sessions, and our Lunch & Learn Aug. 7 will help you figure out “What is a Smartphone?”
There is sure to be something for everyone this summer at Womanspace, and remember, you’re always welcome to come tour the grounds and gardens and walk the labyrinth during daytime hours!
