2nd City Chorus to hold ‘Guest Night’

Online Staff Report

The 2nd City Chorus is sponsoring a special “Guest Night”at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, at The Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 2715 S. Mulford Road, Rockford.

For men who want to sing in a location other than their shower, this is the place to be. This is an interactive event, and guests will actually sing with the Chorus as they rehearse some new songs and sing some familiar melodies.

The Chorus and quartets will also perform some numbers from their repertoire. Refreshments will be served as people get to know each other and share information.

The 2nd City Chorus was formed and chartered in 1996. As a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, this chorus of 20-plus men is well-known and respected within the Illinois District as they have been awarded Small Chorus champions and “Most Entertaining Chorus” in several competitions in addition to being consistently ranked in the top five.

This group consists of men of varying ages from all walks of life who love the hobby of getting together to sing four-part a cappella harmony. Thanks to their director, Joe Tomecek, the Chorus performs a variety of music including classic barbershop, sacred, gospel, pop, show tunes, oldies and comedic-parody. Within the Chorus are two quartets, Second Opinion and Up North Four, who contribute much to their appearances.

The men in 2nd City enjoy rehearsing each week along with performing in the community and participating in competitions. However, the additional benefits of belonging to this chorus are the fellowship, camaraderie and friendships that are formed.

An ongoing goal of this group is to grow in membership, and they are always looking for men who can and want to sing. Their regular rehearsals are at The Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church at 7 p.m. Tuesdays.
