To help bring attention to the serious issue of domestic abuse and generate resources to assist victims, state Rep. Chuck Jefferson, D-Rockford, has announced his office will collect cell phones in October for victims of domestic violence.

By recycling your old cell phone, you are providing a vital lifeline to women and children seeking a safe exit from a dangerous situation,” Jefferson said. “Even if your old cell phone doesn’t work, you will still make a difference by donating it.”

Jefferson’s cell phone drive runs throughout October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Cell phone donations can be made to Jefferson’s office in the Zeke Giorgi Illinois State Building, 200 S. Wyman, in Rockford, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone wills be donated to Remedies in Rockford, a 24-hour emergency shelter for victims of domestic abuse.

Working cell phones will be placed with victims so they can call 911 when in danger. Cell phones that are not in working order are recycled, allowing Remedies to collect a rebate for each phone, generating much-needed funds for their services.

Jefferson is a long-time advocate of public safety and cracking down on domestic abusers and sex offenders. This year, he passed a law removing the statute of limitations for major sex crimes committed against children younger than 18, allowing law enforcement to charge dangerous offenders at any time when corroborating physical evidence is available.

Sexual predators targeting minors should not get away with crimes because their victims were scared or too young to know who to tell,” Jefferson said. “Now, survivors and law enforcement can go after criminals no matter how many years ago the incident occurred. The more we talk about these issues and promote available support services, I hope the easier it will be for victims to speak up and seek help.”

Jefferson reminds people to delete all personal information from their cell phones before donating them. For more information, contact Jefferson’s full-time constituent service office at (815) 987-7433 or visit remediesrenewinglives.org.
