U of I Extension to offer fruit and vegetable growing series

University of Illinois Extension Local Foods and Small Farms Educator Grant McCarty and Horticulture Educator Candice Miller will be instructing a six-week series on best practices in fruit and vegetable gardening for the home grower. The series will meet weekly on Monday evenings at Midway Village Museum, 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford, beginning Jan. 27 through March 3, 2014. Classes will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

The fruit- and vegetable-growing series is appropriate for individuals who are just getting started or have an interest in successfully growing their own food, to those who have considerably more experience,” said Miller.

Grant McCarty and Candice Miller will co-present topics including, soils and composting, garden planning and management, cool and warm season vegetable production, disease and pest prevention and control, as well as how to get started growing small fruits, tree fruits and herbs.

Participants will complete the program with the knowledge needed to successfully grow edibles. Registration is $70 per person, which includes course materials and textbook. Preregistration is required. Visit http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw or call (815) 986-4357.
