Beert Family String Band to perform at Rockton church Dec. 1

ROCKTON, Ill. — The Beert Family String Band, a family trio that plays cello, piano and violin, will perform Sunday, Dec. 1, at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rock Valley, 329 School St., Rockton, Ill. The service starts at 10:30 a.m. The concert of seasonal music is free, and the public is invited.
Michael Beert, who has lived most of his life in the Rockford area, is the cellist. He played in the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) in high school before going to college at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He has been teaching at Rock Valley College for 27 years and was chairman of the Music Department for 10 years. He directed the RSYO for 10 years, and is principal cellist of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra.
Mike’s wife, Rachel Handlin, grew up in Lindsborg, Kan. (Little Sweden, USA) and has played the violin since she was 3. She graduated from Northern Illinois University, where she studied with Pierre Menard of the Vermeer Quartet. She is the string program director and violin instructor at the Music Academy in Rockford. She is also assistant concertmaster of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra.
Aria Beert has been playing violin for six years and piano for two. Her violin instructors both teach at the Music Academy. She is a fifth-grader at Rockford Lutheran Academy at Gloria Dei.
