The driver of a Metro ambulance stolen from Rockford Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon led police on a search through Rockford into Elgin, sources reported as the vehicle sped east on I-90.

The scene unfolded at approximately 4:30 p.m., when a 41-year-old man, believed to be from St. Charles, drove off in the ambulance, weaving through Rockford streets.

Within minutes, police sent out an alert of the theft while witnesses spotted the ambulance near Custer Avenue.

Sightings were also reported near Spring Creek and Perryville roads before another witness spotted the suspect on I-90 near the Chrysler plant.

As of 9: 45 p.m., the vehicle was last seen heading south on Randall Road in Elgin.

The ambulance has the Illinois registration of 106AM, Metro Ambulance written on the side and the number 37 on the doors.

Police say the suspect is a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and 160 pounds with a mustache and brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans, a blue jacket and tan baseball cap.

While it was initially reported that the man was a patient at Rockford Memorial, police later confirmed he was not being treated at the facility and was not transported there by ambulance.

When he’s caught, the suspect will be charged with stealing the ambulance and felonious assault. Police say the man almost hit paramedics and a nurse while he sped away from the scene.

The ambulance was unattended while paramedics brought a patient into the hospital. The suspect got into the vehicle as paramedics were filling out paperwork.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Rockford Police shift commander at (815) 987-5824.
