Man on probation for theft arrested after breaking into funeral home, being caught with candy in pocket

At approximately 6:41 p.m., Jan. 1, officers responded to Collins & Stone Funeral Home, 128 S. Fifth St., in reference to an in-progress burglary.
Upon arrival, officers met with the witness, who stated he observed a subject enter the funeral home through a window. The witness believed the suspect was still inside.
Officers surrounded the funeral home, called for an available Illinois State Police K-9, and subsequently made entry. Officers located the suspect, Edward P. Hall, 32, hiding in the basement of the funeral home. Hall was taken into custody without incident.
Several pieces of candy from a jar within the funeral home were located in Hall’s pockets. He was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and knowingly causing damage to property.
Hall is on probation for theft.
