Urgent: State Police urge motorists to stay off roadways as a result of icy conditions

Online Staff Report

Illinois State Police District 16 and District 1 officials are urging motorists to stay off roadways as a result of the icy conditions this evening, Jan. 10.

“We are receiving reports of hundreds of crashes and vehicles that have slid off of the roadways,” District 16 Interim Commander John Biffany said. “We have at least 50 calls for assistance pending. We are urging motorists to avoid traveling if at all possible until the roadways can be adequately cleared.”

The Illinois State Police reminds motorists to keep a winter survival kit in their cars containing at least a cell phone and charger, blankets and extra clothing, a first aid kit, a flashlight, water and food in the event they become stranded for any length of time.
