Rock River Valley Pantry offers evening hours for working families
Online Staff Report
Anticipating an increased need to serve working families and individuals as a result of the recent closing of a Saturday morning food pantry, the Rock River Valley Pantry (RRVP) will be offering evening pantry hours on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. beginning Feb. 5 and running for 12 weeks.
The evening distribution hours have been designed for working individuals and families that need assistance and cannot utilize the pantry during the daytime hours.
The evening hours will be offered at 421 S. Rockton, Rockford, beginning Feb. 5 and running through April 30. The pilot program will be evaluated after the 10th week to determine if demand requires the special evening hours to continue.
The RRVP operates two pantries and assists an average of 7,000 clients per month. Children are 35 percnet of the client base, and 7 percent of clients are older than 65. During its last fiscal year, more than 1 million pounds of food was distributed.
The RRVP is a community-based pantry and relies on donation from the community to meet the ever-increasing need of those going hungry.
