Katie Nilsson to leave WREX for job in state’s attorney’s office

Rockford’s NBC affiliate will lose its second news anchor in a little more than a week this Friday.
According to multiple reports, Katie Nilsson has accepted a job in the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and will leave WREX-TV Friday, Feb. 7.
While State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato has not confirmed the hire, NTA FM News Director Ken DeCoster reported late Wednesday that Nilsson will be the office’s alternative outreach coordinator.
Nilsson began her broadcasting career in radio at a station in St. Cloud, Minn., before before moving to Rockford. She was with WREX from 2002 to 2007, anchoring “13 News Today.” She returned to the station in 2009. She currently co-anchors the 5 :00 news and serves as the station’s content manager.
Nilsson is the second WREX staff member to leave Channel 13 since former anchorman Eric Wilson was let go Wednesday, Jan. 29. While no details were released, Wilson said it was not his choice to leave the station after nearly 20 years.
Meteorologist Eric Sorenson recently announced that he will not seek a new contract with WREX after 10 years on the air. He plans to leave the station in July. Sorenson has not announced whether he will remain in television or pursue a career in another field.
The Rock River Times will have more on this story as it develops.
