Mariachi Northwestern, Music Academy team up for Feb. 15 ‘Friendship Concert’

Staff Report

Mariachi Northwestern, a student band from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and students from the Music Academy in Rockford will perform a free “Friendship Concert” for the community at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in the First Lutheran Church Sanctuary, 225 S. Third St.

The concert follows a workshop featuring the college band, other guest artists and Academy students playing for and with one another. Both events are in celebration of the Music Academy’s year-long exploration of Mexican culture and Mexican folk and Mariachi music. The celebration will conclude with a trip to San Antonio, Texas, in June where the students will perform at the Alamo and on the famous Riverwalk.

The Music Academy of Rockford is a not-for-profit community school of music dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable instruction and performance opportunities to students, regardless of age or ability. For more information, call (815) 986-0037 or go to
