Rock Valley College (RVC) will host its annual Jazz Festival Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Performing Arts Room (in the ERC building on RVC’s main campus, 3301 N. Mulford Road).
The Jazz Festival is a daylong event featuring high school jazz bands, a jazz clinic, and a concert to cap the evening.
The high school jazz bands will perform from 9 a.m. to noon and admission for this portion of the day is free. Participating local high schools will include Belvidere, Guilford, Auburn, Hononegah, Rockford Christian and Beloit Memorial.
At 1:15 p.m., tenor saxophonist Mark Colby will host a jazz clinic. Admission for this event is also free. Colby is an instructor at Depaul University and Elmhurst College and has played, and in some cases toured with, such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. He is performing as a guest soloist and clinician/adjudicator at middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the United States and Europe.
Finally, the day will conclude with a special concert in the PAR at 7:30 p.m., featuring the Rock Valley College Jazz Ensembles with guest Mark Colby. Tickets for the concert are $8 for adults and $7 for students/seniors and will be available at the door.
