Mendelssohn announces Chandler Starr Miller winners

The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center has announced the winners of the 53rd Annual Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition.

Eighty-six students from the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin area, ages 8-23, competed Saturday, Feb. 22, for monetary awards in various divisions including piano, voice, strings and non-string orchestral instruments. Prominent adjudicators from throughout the region evaluated the students and critiqued their performances. All the winners were honored at a recital Sunday, Feb. 23, at Mendelssohn Hall. The first-place winners in each division performed at the recital. The following is a list the winners of each division.

Elementary Piano — Gracie Webb, Sabrina Meng, Mazie Mawyer and Honorable Mention: Oriana Gjini.

Junior Piano — Hsing-Yng (Winnie Louh), Alyssa Leston, Andrew Leston, Jacob Manley, Jonathan Rivera and Honorable Mention: Jacob Hedberg.

Senior Piano — Emma Webb, Christian Collins, Amber Leston, Ella Domingo, Honorable Mention: Brooke Boxrud, and Honorable Mention: Tiffany Ding.

Elementary Strings — Isabelle Roethle, Aria Beert, Marisel Schalck and Honorable Mention: Ryan Zheng.

Junior Strings — Gabriel Roethle, Benjamin Rodriguez, Kate Willette, Eunice Yoon and Rin T. Katsumata.

Senior Strings — Heather Beckman, Erin Fisher, Chantel Davis, Sofiya Kyrylyuk, Honorable Mention: Annaliesa Caswell, and Honorable Mention: Nina Han.

College Piano/Strings — Genevieve Smelser, Josh Wang and Samuel Benson.

Senior Voice — Andrew Hazen, Emily Hankins-Jean Coppoletti “Joy and Inspiration” Award, Eugene Cichock and Honorable Mention: Claudia Holen.

College Voice — Ian Garthwaite and Sarah Caswell.

Senior Non-String Orchestral Instruments — Thomas Wu, Katie Johnson and Honorable Mention: Morgan Walker.
